6 new tech toys
Yes, they're fun to play with. But they also do the job out there

Casio Pathfinder PAW-5000 ($530)
This attractive watch has them all-altimeter, barometer, thermometer, compass, stopwatch, timer, alarm. It even tells the time, analogue style. But it doesn't stop there. The face is a solar panel, keeping the watch charged continuously. And it will never lose time-atomic timekeeping checks in daily to calibrate. With functions within functions (think: altitude, altitude differentials and alarms) and six buttons to navigate them all, we got confused sometimes. But for the most part, it's easy to use.

The PAW-5000 is certainly newer and more expensive, but nowhere near as user friendly as my PAG240. The only thing it lack to the 5000 is the atomic syncing, which is largely unnecessary. Solar powered, yes. The 5000 has that tiny little screen at 6 o'clock to view functions - the 240 uses the entire dial as a screen - 2 screens, really. It uses the duplex technology, which is 2 layers of lcd screens. So, when you hit the compass, the virtual needles come up over what already exists, fill the whole screen, and are very easy to understand. I keep my subsidiary mainscreen set to the barometric trend graph - very accurate, and lets you know what kind of day or night you can expect based on what is happening right then. And, without being as new, or having the atomic function, it is much cheaper.
