When you’re camping in an all-day downpour, you need seriously waterproof clothing to keep you dry. A good Gore-Tex-style jacket is ideal, but a cheaper coated-nylon model will also do the trick. The jacket should have a large hood so you can wear a cap underneath to keep the hood brim up. (Or you can use a rain hat, like one of those sou’westers, which allows you more free movement to look around.) If you’re going to be active, you’ll need pitzips to help ventilation. And good wrist closures are an asset. Rain pants need zippers as well. They provide ventilation and also let you pull the rain pants on and off without taking off your boots.
