Albertans: mark February 23, 2013 on your calendar. This is the date of the town of Devon’s 2nd Annual Blizzard Bike Race, Alberta’s only winter bike race.

“This event is the only of its kind in Western Canada,” says Evan Wishloff, director of marketing and social media for the race. “Last year’s race was held in late March, and because of that ended up seeing a warm-front with rain blow through the night before the race, making conditions a sloppy, slushy, wet mess. This year we are doing the event earlier in hopes of having much better snow conditions for racing.”

Due to the recent boom in fat-bikes, organizers are also introducing a fat-bike specific category, a first in Western Canada.

This event is branded as a “non-competitive race,” focused more on the atmosphere and having fun than on the results.

The race is slated to be held on February 23, 2013 in Devon, Alberta (branding itself as Bike-Town). Pre-registration is required; cost is $20. Organized by the not-for-profit Devon Bicycle Association.
