6 Spooky Outdoor Adventures for Halloween
Happy Halloween! If you’re looking for an adventurous way to embrace this haunted holiday that doesn’t involve trick-or-treating or a booze-fueled party, find one of these themed activities in your area and get spooky.
Bonus: all these outdoor adventures are kid-friendly, so the entire family can celebrate together!
1. Corn Maze
Probably my favourite fall activity, finding your way through a corn maze with a group of friends can be hilarious, terrifying and adrenaline-inducing. Scary themes abound, from creepy looking mannequins to real life characters that will chase you into corners. Find a tall corn maze and break into teams for a real challenge—the last ones out buy pumpkin spice lattes. For a more relaxing adventure, go during the day, when the sunshine makes everything a little less spooky.
2. Zombie Walk
In true Halloween fashion, join a zombie walk with hordes of the “undead” creeping through the streets. Get your steps in and have an excuse to dress up. Several cities across Canada and the USA host annual zombie marches, and some even raise money for charities.
3. Campfire Story Time
Pitch a tent in the woods and gather around the campfire to tell scary stories. From mythical beasts to ghosts in that very forest, try to spook your camping buddies—just don’t scare yourself, too. (Bonus: bring a campfire roasting stick and make dinner, too!)
4. Torch Tag
Find a nearby field or tree-filled backyard and play a game of torch tag at twilight. The person who is “it” has a flashlight. When they shine the light on another player and call out their name, they become “it.” Transfer the flashlight and take a 10-second getaway.
5. Spooky Scavenger Hunt
Autumn is a beautiful time to find natural treasures. Make a list of items you can find in your area (a red maple leaf, an acorn, a carved pumpkin, etc) and get outside to find them. Tip: to avoid removing the items, bring a camera and take photos.
6. Witching Hour Hike
Midnight is known as witching hour, so bring your headlamp and embark on a night hike. But beware: this might be the scariest night of the year for an after-dark adventure!
