Adventure Without the Crowds: Why Spring is the Best Time to Explore Ucluelet, BC

Many people know about the charm of summers in Ucluelet, located on the far West Coast of Vancouver Island, BC, but anyone looking for a haven from the hustle and bustle of everyday life should consider visiting this spring, when the heartbeat of the sea mingles with the call of migrating birds. The waves are wild; nature is awakening.
But the thing that sticks out most is the quiet. It’s the quiet that you think of while commuting to work every Monday to Friday. The quiet found in misty mornings and moss-slicked rocks. The quiet found in the depths of Ucluelet, BC.
Soak in the Sights and Sounds

Trees droop with rainwater. White-capped waves mirror sunset skies. Spring in Ucluelet is the perfect time to enjoy the quiet allure of this small, oceanside town. March and April mark the end of storm season, a prime time to drink in the cool spray of ocean mist while traversing wooded paths in your mud-fighting boots. Visiting Ukee during this time means you’ll witness some of the most fearsome waves you’ll ever see—from a safe distance, of course.
One of my favourite things to do in Ucluelet during the spring is to explore the Wild Pacific Trail. Try the 2.6-kilometre-long Lighthouse Loop for jagged, dual-toned rock faces and foamy crests of waves.

If you’re craving a forest bath, wander a forested trail in solitude on two feet or two wheels. Draped in West Coast greenery, you’ll discover verdant rainforests and scenic viewpoints. Listen for the call of birdsong and the pattering of raindrops on the foliage high in the tall, ancient trees.
You’ll hear nature throughout your time in Ukee. The crash of white caps against black rocks creates the perfect nighttime lullaby. Get lost in the pages of your favourite book while listening to nature’s aquatic soundtrack.
Wild for Wildlife

Barking sea lions bask in nearby inlets, waking you from your nighttime stupor. As you stretch out of bed, lilting chirps from various migrating bird species’ circle your patio. If you look closely, you may spot Red-necked Grebes, Black Turnstones, or Anna’s Hummingbirds. Ucluelet is teeming with wildlife, and within the first couple hours of your visit, you’ll be sure to hear them all around.
When you step outside, the cool wind chills your skin and you’re greeted by feathered friends. A Sharp-shinned Hawk hides out in a nearby tree, its eyes peeking out from between shaggy leaves. Two deer friends cross the road without hesitation (because there’s no such thing as road traffic here in Ucluelet).

Ucluelet is one of BC’s premier destinations for spotting aquatic animals. The Pacific Rim Whale Festival typically runs during March, making spring the perfect time for visitors to see of these majestic creatures. Keep your eyes on the waves for a glance of a migrating gray whale—over 20,000 will be travelling through the area this spring. It’s a humbling feeling, watching these majestic oceanic giants cresting the salty waves. Remember how small you are when you see a whale’s tail dip in and out of the icy water.
Whales aren’t the only sea creature you can see this time of year—if you’re lucky, you might encounter a seal or otter along the rugged coastline.
Summer Views With Spring Calm

Dip your paddle into the calm waters of a nearby cove, keeping a keen eye out for plentiful marine life. Wander along the horizonless beaches when the tide is low, peeking into tidal pools in search of little crabs. Catch empty waves on your surfboard, enjoying the frothing spray all to yourself.
Once you’ve wrapped up your adventure for the day, head into Ucluelet to enjoy some tangy, salt-rimmed drinks on a wood-paneled patio. The best part? You don’t have to worry about the long lines that summer travel brings. Visiting Ukee right now means uncrowded paths and a new way to adventure for those seeking solitude in nature and space to roam unbounded.

Although spring in Ucluelet feels quiet, nature is loud: endless churning waves, sprinkling rain drops, beautiful bird calls, deep whale’s breaths, first sips of that steaming mug of coffee. Don’t stay home in the city—escape to the coast. Ucluelet is waiting for you.
