Blaze new playgrounds: Ryan Stuart

You may already know Ryan Stuart from all the writing he does for explore, but what you might not know is that he’s a nature fanatic and adrenaline addict. When he gets out there, he really gets out there. Here’s what his recess style is like.
1. What’s your definition of recess?
Any chance I get to get out of the house and work up a sweat. The harder I work the happier I am. The best recess is when I scare myself a little too: whitewater paddling, mountain biking, skiing, climbing, etc.
2. How often do you get outside?
Every day. Sometimes it’s just to walk the dog for half an hour, but usually I get out and do something energetic for at least an hour.
3. What are your favourite outdoor activities?
This is a tough one. I love to try new things and so I like to mix it up. I outrigger canoe, whitewater kayak, climb, run, mountain bike, road bike, ski, and stand-up paddle. I have a few things scheduled but mostly I check weather conditions and go for whatever is best. This time of year is tough because everything is good. If I had to choose, I’d say backcountry skiing, especially if it involves getting to the top of a mountain.
4. Is there anything you haven’t done, but would like to try this year?
I want to learn to sail. I have sailed a bit before, but never by myself. I’m going to take some lessons.
5. What’s your favourite thing about being in nature?
I’m always having fun when I’m in nature. It’s hard to be in a bad mood mountain biking, trail running or paddling. I forget about all the stuff in the office and just enjoy the moment. Plus, there’s so much to see. Plants, animals, tracks, new trails to explore.
