Live the Adventure Club Challenge I
Okay Explorer,
Your mission, should you choose to accept it:
1. Pick a challenge set: beginner or advanced
2. Join our private Live the Adventure Facebook group. Do it now so we can approve your request to join.
Why is it private, you ask? The private group will also contain exclusive content, the opportunity to connect with hundreds of other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts and private interviews with famous explorers. (You can even ask them questions!)
3. Photograph yourself completing the challenges. (Have fun, be safe!)
4. Submit your photos – instructions below – by FEBRUARY 28 at midnight PST. Category winners for the winter 2016 set will be selected March 15.
START A FIRE IN POOR CONDITIONS WITH NATURAL MATERIALS
That means drizzle, rain or snow, and building the fire without fuel or burning non-natural items to sustain your fire.
SNAP AN EDGE-OF-THE-CLIFF SELFIE
Go on, give us vertigo but please be safe.
PHOTOGRAPH A SUNRISE FRAMED BY NATURE
Yep, you gotta get into nature early for this one. And it doesn’t count if you snap a sunrise in your backyard through your bedroom window.
EXPLORE WITH EXPLORE MAGAZINE
Take the Winter 2016 issue for a walk. Show us your favourite viewpoint, trail, waterfall, etc.
BEAUTY IN THE BUFF
Snap a picture of how you wear the Buff you got in the gear box. One caveat: you have to be in the snow, and not it-snowed-overnight-in-my-city snow. Get out there and find some fresh pow pow.
SNAP A PICTURE WITH TRAIL SIGNAGE
This is the perfect way to show us where you’ve been – and an even better excuse to go somewhere new. Provincial park and trail signs are all good.
DO GO CHASING WATERFALLS
Show us a picture of you standing in front of a waterfall. Bonus point if the waterfall is frozen.
START A FIRE IN POOR CONDITIONS WITH NATURAL MATERIALS – AND BRING WATER TO A BOIL
Same rules as above (drizzle, rain or snow, and building the fire without fuel or burning non-natural items to sustain your fire) but you have to prove you boiled your water too.
SNAP AN EDGE-OF-THE-CLIFF SELFIE
Go on, give us vertigo but please be safe.

GO CAMPING AND SNAP A PICTURE OF YOUR TENT GLOWING AFTER DARK
Scared of cold weather? How ’bout planning a camping trip south of the border?
SUBMITTING PHOTOS:
STEP 1: Join the Facebook group
Here >> Explore’s Live the Adventure private Facebook group
What happens next?
The group administrator will approve your request to join.
Users are approved based on the name you used when you signed up for the Live the Adventure Gear Box Club. If for some reason you used a different name when you subscribed than what is listed on Facebook, please send over an email to [email protected] to let us know and we will get you access.
Why is the group private?
Challenges are exclusive to gear box subscribers, so access is limited to those who pay to play. AND, in case you missed it, the private group will also contain exclusive content. Things like the opportunity to connect with hundreds of other like-minded outdoor enthusiasts and private interviews with famous explorers. (You can even ask them questions!)
Why should I join the group before I start the challenge?
It’s important you don’t try to join and submit photos all at once…at the last hour of the challenge (February 28). Why? Because we need a 24-hour window to confirm your membership to the group. Plus, we want to meet you in the meantime; we’re friends now.
Can I talk to other challenge participants within this group?
Totally! In this group you’ll be e-introduced to a community of like-minded Canadian adventurers.
STEP 2: Write a new post & upload pictures
Write “Winter 2016 Challenges – beginner” OR “Winter 2016 Challenges – advanced” and upload all of your challenge photos – hopefully you were able to complete all 7.
VERY IMPORTANT
***We need a SINGLE Facebook post demonstrating your challenge submission***
We understand you might want to share your photos along the way – which is totally encouraged! (We’ve even made you a special Instagram account where we’ll share your photos: Instagram.com/LTAClub)
BUT to make it easy for us to tabulate points and select winners, please post your final “Winter 2016 Challenges – beginner/advanced” to formalize your submission, just like the example above. Our rationale is that we can’t be chasing down random photos in the Facebook group to count as your submission.
Thanks for understanding!

Why do we do it this way? Because this is not a photography contest, it is a participation challenge. We want to encourage and reward participation.

Frequently Asked Questions:
I’m not a professional photographer…
Not to worry, we’re not photographers by trade either. Use a smartphone, point-and-shoot, GoPro, or a big fancy DSLR if you want. (Sounds kinda heavy to be packing around the woods though…)
No seriously, my photography skills are basic beyond belief…
As long as you can prove your challenge was completed and the photo is relatively in-focus, you should be okay. We’re all friends here.
Do the photos have to be taken in Canada?
No! If you’re going on holiday, feel free to take your challenges on the road.
Can I use old photos of me completing a challenge?
Again, this is not a photo contest, it is a participation contest. We’re assuming gear box subscribers and challenge participants are doing this for the thrill of it, not for the fame and glory.
