Northwestern Ontario’s rich mining history is carved deep into the hard rock at Amethyst Mine Panorama, North America’s largest amethyst deposit. The authentic site is only a few minutes’ drive from the Trans-Canada Highway, just a half-hour drive from Thunder Bay. Informative walking tours survey the mine and take in the area’s great scenery, above and below the ground. It’s a chance to learn about the natural geology and experience the down-to-earth cultural history of the area. Of course, you’re going to want to grab a hammer and mine the depths yourself. Get swinging and you can take home your own shimmering sample of violet quartz.
