Of course, Masaya volcano should be given the respect any volcano deserves. The mountain is constantly monitored by the authorities and can be swiftly closed when necessary. While a closure can be disappointing, it testifies to Nicaragua’s dynamic nature and gives you a great reason to come back to another time! A good alternative is Cerro Negro. Central America’s youngest volcano at a sprightly 175 years of age (give or take), it’s not only a great place to safely hike an active volcano (again, respect any closures or restrictions), but is home to the unique sport of volcano boarding, which invites thrill-seekers to toboggan down the volcanic gravel that covers its slopes, protected by a helmet, goggles and nerves of steel. To get your blood pumping in less volcanic surrounds, opt for horseback riding, cycling or kayaking. One of the best places for outdoor adventure is Somoto Canyon, discovered by accident in 2004 in Nicaragua’s north near the Honduras border. Remote as it is, Somoto is well worth the day trip for those up to its physical challenges.

The Caribbean is Nicaragua’s less developed and less visited coast, but it offers its own natural delights. The Corn Islands in particular stand out if you’re seeking a tranquil Caribbean escape far from crowded all-inclusive resorts. When Should You Go?
The best time to visit Nicaragua is usually during the dry season, from November to April. Since the country remains largely a hidden treasure in Central America, there’s no ‘high season,’ so you won’t see a big spike in crowds or prices. Still, don’t write off the ‘wet season.’ Lush greenery throughout the country means more fantastic photos in Nicaragua’s gorgeous national parks. This is also peak surfing season on the Pacific Coast, so brave the odd downpour and enjoy the swells if that’s your vibe.
