At 23, Harvey is on his way to the top—fast

Mont-Sainte-Anne, Quebec
// Age: 23

When skier Alex Harvey raised his index finger to the sky at the World Cup championships last winter he was celebrating Canada’s first-ever Nordic gold medal in the event, but he might also have been indicating his career trajectory. Still young for a Nordic skier, Harvey plans to be around for “at least” two more Olympics. He placed ninth in his top individual Olympic event in Whistler in 2010, but (with his world championship partner Devon Kershaw) managed fourth in the team sprint—the best-ever finish by Canadian men in an Olympics. It won’t be easy for Harvey to stay on top of the world in this famously punishing sport, but he appears to understand what it takes. “You need to suffer,” he says. “It never gets easier. You just go faster.”
