New GPS Gravity Enduro bike race hits Fernie
Held this Sunday, the GPS Gravity Enduro promises to be a bike race like no other. Rather than hosting a straight “A to B” mountain bike course, British Columbia’s Fernie Alpine Resort Bike Park is holding a race with no finish line and a very loose trail along the way. In fact, racers can choose their own course from 30 of the resort’s world-renowned trails, and are only required to hit four mandatory checkpoints along the way. As each racer moves through the trails they will be monitored by Flaik GPS tracking devices, which can be monitored and viewed in real time on the leaderboard at Race HQ. At the end of the day, GPS data will be tallied and winners will be determined based on scores for factors such as cumulative mileage and top speed. Not only are there multiple ways to win, but another fun part for racers is that they’re able to compare stats with other riders through the “relive your day” feature that will appear on the Flaik website.
It’s $50 to enter and racers must be at least 14 years old. They must also hold a valid 2012 Cycling BC/UCI Race License or Citizen License or purchase single-event insurance beforehand for a small fee.
If navigating through country, single track and downhill trails at top speeds isn’t your thing, there’s tons of other stuff going on at Fernie this weekend for the Powerade Gravity Bike Festival. The popular Timber Downhill mountain bike race will be returning this Saturday, July 14th, which will also include a junior category for 13- and 14-year-olds hoping to participate.
