New trails and improvements coming with a $350,000 investment for Sun Peaks Bike Park

Ready to try mountain biking this summer at Sun Peaks?

To celebrate its 20th birthday, Sun Peaks Bike Park is getting a face lift.

Primarily known for having Canada’s second largest skiable terrain, Sun Peaks beckons to adventurers in summer, too. The small community near Kamloops, BC, is a haven for avid mountain bikers. It’s often been viewed as a difficult hill for experts—until this year.

An investment of $350,000 in 2019 will go towards the construction of upgrades and new trails, including two freeride trails. Designed for intermediate riders, these new trails will cater to a wider variety of skill levels. Improvements are also in the works for beginner levels, such as the new Progression Park zone—the perfect place for young and entry level riders. Advanced riders will be treated to a brand-new section of Steam Shovel (the advanced jump line).

“This investment is big for us. Building almost 12 kilometres of new trail that will appeal to riders of all types is the perfect way to celebrate our 20th anniversary of bike park operations. Sun Peaks has always been a destination for core downhill riders, and will continue to be, but now we’ll have a much more well-rounded mountain bike product to help create the same success we have seen with our winter ski experience,” said Aidan Kelly, Chief Marketing Officer at Sun Peaks Resort.

In addition to the upgrades in the Bike Park, the resort is working closely with the community-based Sun Peaks Recreational Trail Association to support their efforts in developing and growing the cross-country biking trails in the area.

With all these new initiatives, explore magazine is planning on making a summer trip to Sun Peaks to experience alpine wildflowers, hiking trails, paddling in surrounding lakes and—just maybe—ripping down the mountain on two wheels.

The Sun Peaks Bike Park opens for the 2019 season on Friday, June 21. For more information about mountain biking in Sun Peaks, click here.
