New Accommodation & Events at Ontario Parks

 

Two big park anniversary events will also take place in summer 2014. In July, Killarney Provincial Park will celebrate its 50th anniversary with its first annual Group of Seven Festival and in August, Wasaga Beach Provincial Park will host the 200th Anniversary of the Battle of Nottawasaga Bay. Summer 2014 also means Learn-to-Camp is back at select Ontario Parks. New Parkbus access has been added to Learn to Camp sessions at Six Mile Lake and Grundy Lake Provincial Parks, north of Toronto. Five Ontario Parks are getting new roofed accommodation. Anglers will love the new cabin now available at Fushimi Lake Provincial Park, north of Hearst. Both Finlayson Point (near Temagami) and Bon Echo Provincial Parks have new cabins available. And a new backcountry cabin only accessible by boat or canoe has also opened at Charleston Lake Provincial Park near Brockville. Killarney Provincial Park celebrates its 50th anniversary July 18 to 20, 2014. The first annual Group of Seven Festival will be a part of the anniversary celebration. Group of Seven painter, A.Y. Jackson, greatly influenced this park’s creation. Franklin Carmichael, another member of the Group of Seven, also painted many of his famous canvases in Killarney. The park’s landscape continues to fascinate artists, art-lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The first annual Group of Seven Festival will include plein air art sessions, Group of Seven-inspired hikes and special evening presentations. The 200th anniversary of the Battle of Nottawasaga Bay will take place at Wasaga Beach Provincial Park, August 14 to 17. “Wasaga under Siege” will feature a Grand Encampment at Nancy Island Historic Site with over 500 re-enactors including soldiers, 19th century merchants and artisans. Authentic War of 1812 tactics, historical battles and marine assault landings will bring to life the famous War of 1812 battle that was fought against US forces.
