On the Photos in Bold Series

Stunning sunset photo

Many have written or spoken about photography, much more precisely and beautifully than what I could only attempt to imitate. I have no formal education in the craft, nor do I have much experience with photography beyond the film and digital cameras I’ve thrifted and dabbled in as short-lived hobbies. As a spectator, however, I respect the medium for its methodology, universality and purpose in our era. Photographers focus our gaze and distill the chaos and charm of life with digestible shots. They sort and curate the disorder that surrounds us with intention and care, directing our attention toward the mundane and the salient alike. I find it essential to preserve this type of authentic visual storytelling, just as journalism internships, like my time at explore, help pump fresh blood into this industry.

From this vantage point, I started the Photos in Bold series: to create a paid space for talented emerging photographers to share their love of the medium, finetune their work and get their foot in the door with feedback and support from a community that is rooting for their success. As you look over and read these six photo essays, I hope this intention and the respect and effort each artist has poured into their work shines through.

Each essay from this series was fuelled by a sense of wonder, a desire to experiment and learn, and the mission to enlighten and evoke reflection while inspiring the motivation to get outside. I’m incredibly proud of this series and even more honoured to have had the pleasure of working with such talented individuals through assigning and editing their beautiful, profound work. I’m thankful to the team at explore for supporting this project, and I hope that initiatives like Photos in Bold and its underlying philosophy continue to take up space in our media.

With love and gratitude,
Ghazal
