Rugged Maniac Adventure Race is Coming to Surrey and I’m Accepting the Challenge
Let’s hear it for the West Coast weekend warriors.
Those whose week days are caught up in the frenetic pace of the city, but spend weekends bagging peaks and grinding gears.
When I heard that Rugged Maniac was coming back to the Cloverdale Fairgrounds on July 15, I took the bait. And I challenged a few of my friends to get muddy too.
Rugged Maniac, what’s the deal?
Rugged Maniac looks to fit its namesake.
Getting together as a team or solo athlete, you get to tackle 25 obstacles over a span of 5 filthy kilometres. Warped walls, The Guillotine, and Frog Hops, just to name a few. A mixture of mud, fire, beer, and a mechanical bull? Proof that Rugged doesn’t take itself too seriously.
Compared to some of the other adventure races I have done, where the overall tone is “Test your mettle” and “Endure the pain”, Rugged Maniac promises to be more about a day of having fun, and getting into the kind of crazy shenanigans I used to with the kids in my neighbourhood when I was growing up.
So with my team set, all we have left to do is get “game day ready”. Some training and light conditioning are in order (don’t want to pull a hammy!), we’re putting the finishing touches on our costumes, and squeezing in the odd practice beer – you know – for the sake of the race. (Don’t want to be ill-prepared!)
Oh yes, one more thing. Does anyone know where I can get some mechanical bull riding practice?
See you at the start line!
