The Best Sustainable Ski Gear

snowboarding mountain fun

As a skier spoiled by the world-class snow of British Columbia, it takes something extraordinary to pull me away from my favourite slopes. But Austria was calling, with its rich ski heritage and a chance to experience an adventure amidst authentic European culture and cuisine. I chose to offset my emissions with Tomorrow’s Air before heading to the famed slopes of St. Anton and the family-run eco-conscious Arlmont Hotel. Known for its lively après-ski and bustling pistes, it didn’t take long to realize that Austria’s true magic lay beyond the crowds.

My journey led to the serene beauty of Kühtai and Gargellen, where English was rarely spoken, and sustainability was woven into every detail. From locally-owned, eco-conscious stays like the Mooshaus and Heimspitze to snowshoeing and ski touring at the Silvretta-Bielerhöhe, I discovered a deeper connection to Austria’s alpine traditions. Essential to making my ski trip as sustainable as possible was not just choosing eco-conscious accommodations and experiences but also relying on sustainably sourced gear.

As skiers, snowboarders and winter sport enthusiasts, we have a responsibility to protect the mountains we cherish, which is why I support organizations like Protect Our Winters (POW) and gear companies that source sustainably and support like-minded environmental conservation missions.

From head to toe, here are some of the sustainably sourced items that I tested in Austria and have continued to use since then. Sustainable gear is only sustainable if it’s durable and lasts, and these products, I can honestly say, I’m still using today.

Icebreakers excels in Merino wool clothing for their durability, efficiency and sustainability. I’ve been wearing mine on the ski hill, snowshoe trails and recently on a chilly seven-day rafting trip in the Northwest Territories. It resists odour and dries quickly—ideal for repeated wear without frequent washing on multi-day trips (I can attest to the odour resistance after seven days in the same shirts and leggings). They trace 100 per cent of their wool to the source and most participate in a regenerative wool initiative developed by The New Zealand Merino Company.

By 2028, their goal is to have 100 per cent of their wool coming from farms that use regenerative practices. Though not yet plastic-free, 14 per cent of synthetics have been replaced with bio-based alternatives as they continue to work towards a 100 per cent plastic-free goal. Essential for outdoor adventures are the Icebreaker 200 leggings and long sleeves, perfect for layering while the 260 line is thicker and offers extra warmth. Oh, and don’t forget about their essential over-the-calf  ski socks as well.
