The Great Canadian Voyageur contest

A week ago I spent time with the winners of the Great Canadian Voyageur contest in Mattawa, Ontario. The grand prize was to “glamp” with me in a fully furnished prospector tent at Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park. The winners (the Gill Family) were a fantastic family – a family who had camped numerous times before but never in such luxury. Mike Stiell, the Mattawa tourism representative, and I served fancy camp dishes and took them for a paddle down the Mattawa River. They also enjoyed a half-day guided hike, a guided paddle in a replicated voyageur canoe, fishing and a visit to local artisans’.

Here’s the family’s letter of thanks:

We are the lucky winners of the Great Canadian Voyageur Adventure Contest. We would like to thank you for the opportunity to share this experience. We enjoyed so many wonderful sights in the Mattawa region and now plan to return some day soon. The time we spent with Kevin Callan was not only fun and entertaining but also informative and very useful to us as campers. Our host/guide Mike Stiell was exceptional. He was an excellent organizer who treated us with warmth and hospitality which made us feel at home. He showed us many unique spots that he knew would appeal to our interests and which made the trip all the more special. He took the time to plan our experience so that it was tailored to our interests and he took into consideration all of our special needs. He was extremely organized and thorough and took care of all the little details that made our trip so memorable. He is definitely someone with a great knowledge of the region and he did an excellent job promoting its many virtues. We greatly appreciate all of the efforts of everyone involved in organizing this trip. We met many wonderful people and it is definitely an experience we will always remember.

Sincerely Fraser Gill
