The Happy Camper: Debating Canoeing and Camping With American Paddling Icon, Cliff Jacobson
Cliff Jacobson is one of North America’s most respected outdoors writers and is the most published canoeing/camping writer of this century. His numerous titles have been translated into Spanish, German, French and Turkish with sales approaching one million copies. The book Canoeing Wild Rivers, 5th Edition is the authoritative resource for wilderness canoe expeditions. An accomplished canoeist in his own right, Cliff was recently recognized by the American Canoe Association (ACA) which presented him with the Legends of Paddling Award and inducted him into the ACA Hall of Fame.
So, who better to debate camping tips with…?
I interviewed Cliff during another one of my Zoom Whisky Fireside chats. It was a fun one. Cliff doesn’t hold back. He says what’s on his mind, and he has a lot on his mind. Him and I have debated over many camping tips and tricks over the years when we gather at spring outdoor shows. I’ve even shared the stage with him and discussed various subjects, from simple things like the best rain hat to more complex issues like how to properly pronounce the word “portage.”
During the interview, Cliff goes over some top debates: should your ground tarp (footprint) go inside your tent or outside; straight shaft paddles versus bent shaft; best footwear for canoe tripping; should you hang your food pack; and why Ontario’s crown land fees are forcing Americans to go paddling in the western provinces of Canada instead.
They are all solid debates, and Cliff makes a good argument for each. Check out the interview on my KCHappyCamper YouTube channel and let me know your own views.
