The Happy Camper: Join Me on a Trip on Lake Superior

This is going to be an amazing trip! Come join me for a voyageur canoe journey along the North Shore of Lake Superior. David Wells of Naturally Superior and Trans Canada Trail have partnered up to create a five-day wilderness water trail canoe trip along the rugged Lake Superior Highlands Conservation Reserve. The trip is from July 4 to 9, 2025.

It’s a 55-kilometre round trip journey from Naturally Superior Adventures’ paddling centre at the mouth of the Michipicoten River—and it’s going to be awesome!

The section of Superior we are paddling is an absolute oasis, complete with Caribbean-like beaches, picture perfect campsites, rugged rock shorelines and turquoise coloured water. Wildlife sightings are common, and you’ll most likely catch a lake trout for lunch just by dangling a fishing line over the side of the canoe.

We are also paddling in style with a 36-foot (11-metre) voyageur canoe—it’s fast, stabile and suitable for trippers of all ages and skill sets.
The trip includes meals and snacks (amazing wilderness cuisine is Naturally Superior’s expertise), and top-notch group camp gear. There will also be two professional guides to handle all the details and safety. And of course, I’ll be tagging along to tell a few tales of my wilderness travels and share a few tips and tricks on how to be a “Happy Camper.”

The highlight is the stop over at Denison Falls—accessible only by water. This place has been on my bucket list ever since I first watched Bill Mason’s movie Waterwalker. There’s a classic scene in the film where Mason stops to camp and paint here. I absolutely love that scene—and the scenery. This 40-metre cascade, born from the tributaries of the Dog River, plunges over glassy bedrock edged with boreal moss and pine and ends with a ghostly mist bellowing up as the river water hits the cold liquid of Lake Superior.
I can’t wait to camp there!

And just to note, by this trip being offered in partnership with the Trans Canada Trail—18 per cent of the trip fees go towards supporting the organization’s ongoing development and stewardship of the world’s longest network of recreational trails. That’s cool!

So, I promise not to duplicate my nightly stories around the campsite, and I guarantee a paddling experience of a lifetime along one of the most majestic masterpieces nature has ever created.
