The Happy Camper: KEEN’s New NXIS Evo Waterproof Boot
I’ve field-tested KEEN’s new NXIS Evo Waterproof Boot on three back-to-back canoe trips so far, and I’m giving these pair of cozy boots two very big thumbs up.
First off, they’re waterproof. That’s a bonus. Of course, it’s a given that if the water along a muddy portage or hiking trail goes past the ankle, you’re going to get a wet foot. But on my past three canoe trips, I had dry feet at the end of each day. You have to love that.

I’ve always preferred KEEN footwear for their wide fit—I’ve never had my toes squished—and there’s always no breaking-in time. But this new design has some extras that are awesome. They’re lightweight, breathable and come equipped with an Eco Anti-Odor for natural odor control. And I definitely need odor control.
I chose the boot rather than the shoe. I need good ankle support on the portages and these boots definitely have that. There’s no slip in the heel area. The tread is nice on the rough trails, too. It’s more of a flat tread with directional traction.
The one extra bonus feature that seems trivial but is a good reason to get yourself a pair is the top collar hooks for lacing them up. What a snug fit. These laces are never going to dangle and trip you up on the trail.
