The Happy Camper: Online Gear Shopping is on the Rise
It seems like everyone is shopping online this year. After all, why wait in line, physically distance and strap on a face mask when you can have anything and everything dropped off on your front porch?
There is one major downside to all this, of course. Ordering online can really hurt local businesses—unless you order through them rather than the larger chains.
Algonquin Outfitters has been one of my go-tos this season when I need an extra piece of camp gear. The shop launched a new online store a few months ago. Now, the online selection carries close to 1,000 products. Here are five top sellers:
Nemo Tempo 20 Sleeping Bag
I have this bag and love it. I’m a side sleeper and this bag, unlike most mummy bags, accommodates for this. It’s “spoon” shaped, so it lets you freely toss and turn through the night without restrictions. It’s also darn light and packs to the size of a football. The synthetic insulation Stratofiber™ is moisture resistant. Bonus: stuff your extra clothes into the integrated pillow pocket and create a cozy place to lay your head at night.
Helinox Camp Chair
This is an excellent camp chair. It’s solid, lightweight and comfortable. It weighs just over one pound. Since I’m in my late 50s, there’s no trip I’d head out on without it packed away.
AO’s Original Canoe Pack
This pack was initially made for Algonquin Outfitter’s outfitting and rental programs. Paddlers loved it so much AO started selling it. I love how rugged, functional and simple it is. It also has a comfortable shoulder strap and hip belt, and comes complete with side compression straps, top and bottom grab handles and a top flap pocket.
YETI Rambler 20 oz Muskoka (Limited Edition)
YETI is a great brand name—and it seems a lot of campers are packing one of their sturdy mugs on trip these days. But not many will have this one. Grab it before it’s out of stock.
Badger Sassafras Tripper Paddle
Badger makes awesome paddles and one of my favourite is their traditionally shaped ottertail paddle. It’s smooth to paddle and pushes a good deal of water. You can use it tandem, but I prefer this one for solo. Its thin tip also cuts nicely into the water. It comes in other woods (cherry, ash, tulipwood) but I like the look of sassafras.
