The Happy Camper: Transglobal Car Expedition Approaches the Finish Line
I’ve had my share of big road trips, but nothing like the Transglobal Car Expedition. It’s a 17-month, 50,000 kilometre plus circumnavigation of the planet, from pole to pole, with a fleet of hybrid electric vehicles.
The journey around the globe was led by Canadian Rally and former Ford Performance racer Andrew Comrie-Picard. The team is made up of explorers, scientists and drivers. And the vehicles that took them across frozen tundra and blazing hot deserts were a fleet of four Ford Super Duty F-350s, four Expedition SUVs and a hybrid F-150 PowerBoost truck. The fleet of specialized hybrid battery vehicles were built to withstand extreme global terrain and temperatures, designed to improve range efficiency and to have minimal impact to the planet.
Their route chosen for the 17-month expedition—the world’s first wheeled intercontinental crossing—started in New York City and headed northwest through the US and Canada. From there, they continued to the Arctic and the North Pole, and then to Norway. The next leg of the trip had them travel across Europe, the African continent, Antarctica and then the South Pole. They made their way back to the starting point by driving north through South and Central America, and back through the US and New York City, NY.
The Transglobal Car Expedition is coming close to the finish line. They should be arriving back in New York City by the end of April.
