Pymatuning State Park

It lines the shore of the 17,088-acre Pymatuning Lake, known for its calm waters and excellent fishing, kayaking, canoeing and sailing.
For swimmers, four public beaches are open from Memorial Day through Labour Day, plus an extra beach for campers in the Jamestown Camping Area. With more than 650 campsites across three areas and 25 modern cabins, it’s easy to stretch your visit into a weekend.
Don’t miss the quirky local landmark on the lake, the Linesville Spillway. Nicknamed “where the ducks walk on the fish,” this odd attraction draws curious crowds as ducks appear to walk on the backs of large numbers of carp, all jostling for breadcrumbs tossed by visitors.
French Creek
Winding through four Pennsylvania counties before meeting the Allegheny River, the 188-kilometre-long French Creek is considered one of the most biologically diverse waterways of its size in the US. Thanks to its calm current, French Creek is ideal for canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. For a scenic paddle, float the roughly 11-kilometre stretch from Cambridge Landing to Venango, or take the 14-kilometre route from Venango to Bertram Park in Saegertown, which passes right by an eagle’s nest.
Anglers will also find plenty to get excited about, as more than 80 fish species call the creek home, including smallmouth bass, walleye and muskellunge, along with thriving populations of freshwater mussels. If you prefer to stay dry, enjoy French Creek on foot or by bike via the Ernst Bike Trail (EBT), a 19-kilometre converted rail trail running from Meadville west toward Conneaut Lake. The first five kilometres trace the creek, winding through marshlands and wildflower meadows.
Erie National Wildlife Refuge
Spanning more than 8,700 acres of peaceful, rolling countryside in eastern Crawford County, the Erie National Wildlife Refuge is the spot for uncrowded trails. The refuge is divided into two main sections: the Sugar Lake Division and the Seneca Division, and it is home to a rich mosaic of habitats, including wetlands, upland forests and meadows.
You might spot white-tailed deer, river otters, beavers and even black bears, but the real draw is the birdlife, with over 230 bird species ranging from bald eagles and wood ducks to warblers and sandhill cranes.
Trails throughout the refuge feature interpretive signs to help you connect with the landscape. For a scenic loop, try the 4.3-kilometre Deer Run Trail, which includes observation platforms overlooking wetlands.
