Unique Outdoor Adventures in New Brunswick’s Parks

New Brunswick is a paradise for nature lovers, with diverse landscapes ranging from pristine coastline to rugged mountains to lush forests. While many visitors come for the amazing hiking, camping and wildlife sighting opportunities, there are other adventures that you likely didn’t know you could experience in New Brunswick’s provincial parks. From adrenaline rushes to serene moments and leisurely sports to fun for the whole family, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Stargaze at Mt Carleton Provincial Park

Escape the city lights and experience the beautiful night sky at Mt. Carleton Provincial Park, which was designated as a Dark Sky Preserve by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. The park is committed to reducing light pollution and energy consumption to keep the skies dark. Bring a telescope or simply lie back on a blanket as you take in the breathtaking stars, constellations and planets. Don’t forget to make a wish on those shooting stars!

Seaside Golf at Herring Cove Provincial Park

Many golf enthusiasts are already privy to the 18-hole course at Mactaquac, but the stunning seaside backdrop at Herring Cove Provincial Park provides all the more reason to come and perfect your swing. Situated on Campobello Island overlooking the Bay of Fundy, this 9-hole course is complete with daily green fees, golf carts, a pro shop, putting green and club rentals.

Go Boating at Mactaquac Provincial Park

On a beautiful, warm day, there’s nowhere else you want to be than on the water. Mactaquac Provincial Park has two well-equipped marinas catering to power boats and sailboats, as well as a selection of local boat launches. The beautiful St John River offers 100 kilometres of navigable waters waiting to be explored, with some of the best inland boating conditions in the region. Go fishing, paddle along the peaceful waters or simply cruise and admire the picturesque surroundings.

Atlantic Canada’s First Lift-Access Mountain Bike Park

New Brunswick boasts many trails to explore on two wheels, but cyclists are treated to the option of a chair lift at Sugarloaf Provincial Park, located in Atholville. Take the lift to the top of the mountain and cruise down (walk or bike) the various trails catering to different skill levels, downhill or cross-country, as you admire the scenic landscapes and gravity-defying jumps. The park also offers bike rentals if you don’t have your own.

Play with Your Pup at Dog-Friendly Parks

You’ll be happy to know that you don’t have to leave your canine friend behind, as all New Brunswick’s provincial parks welcome dogs on leashes. This means you can explore the Great Outdoors with your four-legged best friend by your side. From picturesque hikes to leisurely strolls to the beloved game of fetch, your dog will surely enjoy being out in nature as much as you do. (Note: dogs are not permitted on beaches.)

Day Use Areas for Picnics and BBQs

Not every visit to the park has to be for a long hike or overnight camping trip. New Brunswick’s provincial parks offer well-equipped day use areas where you can have a fun-filled afternoon or evening with family and friends. Pack a picnic, fire up the barbecue and spend quality time surrounded by beautiful nature connecting to yourself and your loved ones. These day use areas are perfect for relaxing, playing games, reading books and making lifelong memories.

Accessibility Features

The provincial parks are committed to ensuring that everyone can enjoy the outdoors. Many parks offer accessible infrastructure, from docks to washrooms to pathways. For example, Parlee Beach Provincial Park features a mobi-mat rolled out on the sidewalk to the water to allow wheelchairs, walkers, hippocampe chairs and strollers to navigate the beach. Bathrooms are male, female and gender-neutral, and include accessibility features. Sugarloaf Bike Park also has a Bowhead adaptive bike available to rent—your first visit is free!
