Marathons may be a dime a dozen, but this weekend Vancouver will be hosting what is hoped to become a world-renowned race, and has already managed to garner some international attention.

For the first time in a decade, the BMO Vancouver Marathon route has been redesigned. With previous years’ registration numbers dwindling, the course was given a radical overhaul to highlight some of the city’s most unique—and breathtaking—qualities, incorporating the 10km seawall and providing more stunning views of the ocean and mountains that surround the city.

In fact, the course’s recent redesign prompted Forbes to name the race one of the “Top 10 Marathons Worth Travelling For,” alongside destinations in Cali, France, South Africa, Greece, and China’s Great Wall run.

So what can athletes expect? 70 percent of the 42.2-kilometre route runs along the city shoreline, doubling the amount of ocean exposure from the previous race. The route then takes runners through some of Vancouver’s most diverse neighbourhoods before finishing at the Olympic cauldron on Coal Harbour.

The marathon begins this Sunday, May 6th at 8:00 a.m. For more information, visit BMO Vancouver Marathon.
