Wanigan workshop at the Canadian Canoe Museum

Here’s the latest workshop available at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario. A workshop on how to make your own wanigan. Very cool.

A wanigan is a wooden box that holds kitchen supplies on a canoe trip. Build this unique piece of camping equipment while learning about the history and uses of wanigans past and present.

With the help of knowledgeable instructors you will construct your wanigan and learn the basics of harness making while you handcraft your own tumpline. Customize your wanigan with a Checker or Backgammon board (patterns provided). This workshop is multi-disciplinary blend of woodworking and leatherworking and the result is a functional wanigan, ready to be packed and portaged. All materials including wood, stamped harness leather and gameboard patterns are provided – no experience necessary!
