Want to Get Your Kids Outside on more Outdoor Adventures?

Put down the iPads and iPhones and challenge your family to adventure

They might not be able to conquer a 20-kilometre hike on two feet, but kids were made for outdoor adventure. In our Adventure Challenge Club, we have members with toddlers to teenagers. We design adventure challenges that all ages—from 8 months to 80 years old—can complete, so no one has an excuse not to get outside and adventure.

How?

Creativity and openness.

It’s time to expand your idea of outdoor adventure. You don’t have to reach Everest Base Camp or paddle the Northwest Passage to be an explorer. Getting your kids active and outside is as easy as putting on appropriate clothes and leaving the house.

I know this because I see it every day on our Adventure Challenge Club.

Many parents struggle to get their kids to go outside and play. Our Adventure Challenge Club encourages parents to go outside and explore with their kids, meaning you get a healthy dose of fresh air and exercise, too.

Plus, with prizes like tents, backpacks, coolers and hiking boots up for grabs, focused challenges offer a clear goal: winning sweet new gear.

If you think you’ll be bored, think again. Kids have amazing imaginations, which are fully flexed to create new worlds in the outdoors (away from iPads and smartphones that do it from them). There are plenty of important reasons that developing youngsters can benefit from time spent outside.

One of the perks? You’ll have a blast, too.

Wondering where to start? Here are three simple tips to get your kids on more outdoor adventures:

1. Involve Food

Who doesn’t love to eat? Plan a picnic in the park or trek through the trails to the local ice cream spot. Invest in a regional botanical book and forage for ingredients for your next meal. Roast s’mores and hotdogs over a campfire, go fishing or pick berries outside with your little ones. Once there is a clear goal—like finding wild strawberries—it’s easier to focus on the task at hand and forget about cartoons on the iPad.

2. Get out of WiFi Range

Wandering where the WiFi is weak immediately removes distractions. Can’t outrun cell service? Make an “Airplane Mode” rule: once you’re out of the car, no more texting (that includes you!). Keep your phone on hand for emergencies and family photo-ops.

3. Join the Adventure Challenge Club

There are over 2,000 members in our private Facebook community from across Canada and the United States. Every Monday, month, season and year we host massive adventure challenges designed to be completed in any province/state, with any level of fitness and any age of child.

What parent hasn’t struggled to find something new and exciting to do with their kids on the weekend?

The whole idea behind the Adventure Challenge Club, is to help families create memories by spending time together outdoors.

“Kids are spending more and more time on screens. While their tablet  can be a nice break for a parent, kids are spending less time playing, and even less time creating a positive connection with the outdoors.  As soon as I introduced my kids to outdoor challenges, they were eager to put down their iPads, and were super eager for the next adventure” said Ryan McKenzie, a dad who has added adventure challenges to his family together time.  Most of them, challenges from Explore’s new Adventure Challenge Club.

Families are loving the Adventure Challenge Club

The Adventure Challenge Club isn’t just for people experienced in outdoor recreation.  The program has options for both beginners and experts, so that even children are able to enjoy the experience.

“I love the motivation I get from the explore group to get outside.

My toddler was once content to ride on my back. This photo was taken on the East Coast Trail in Newfoundland last winter. Even before she was two, she wanted to walk and did walk over one kilometre to the viewpoint. This viewpoint was icy and windy. To keep her safe, she had to be on Mommy’s back. I look forward to building her hiking endurance and encouraging her natural love of being outdoors.” – Jenny

What families are saying about us…

“We have always been an adventurous family, enjoying activities like climbing, skiing, hiking and camping. When my daughter was born last April, I was feeling a bit daunted by the idea of having two young children (and my step-son on weekends) to get outside on adventures with. Our life was starting to feel a bit city-bound, until I learned about the Explore Live the Adventure Club. I’m a sucker for challenges, so the extra motivation to get outside has really helped us set our priorities straight. The extra push has lead to so many moments out in nature, which make us remember who we are and why we are here!” – Amanda (Club Member)
