White House recognizes Outdoor Industry Association’s sustainability work
President Obama’s Champions of Change program, part of the Winning the Future Initiative, honours those who are doing extraordinary work. The program recognizes educators, community leaders, and groups from many different fields who share a common goal of working for good causes and bettering their communities. This year, the Outdoor Industry Association ® (OIA) is being recognized as a leader in Corporate Environmental Sustainability.
Based in Boulder, Colorado, the Outdoor Industry Association is the leading trade association for the outdoor industry. Thanks to the efforts of companies within this industry who were individually committed to sustainability, the Outdoor Industry Association’s Sustainability Working Group (OIA SWG) was created in 2007. This volunteer organization is made up of outdoor industry retailers, suppliers, and brands that collaboratively explore ways to improve their environmental and social impact.
The OIA SWG is committed to: reducing waste and pollution; focusing on social responsibility and fair labour issues; ethical practices; responsible chemicals management; traceability of materials throughout the supply chain; and index development for equipment, clothing, and footwear.
Representatives on the current OIA SWG Advisory Council include Black Diamond, Columbia Sportswear, Mountain Equipment Co-Op, Nau, Nester Hosiery, Patagonia, Petzl, Polartec, REI, and Timberland.
