Gear Up: Get Equipped for Mellow Spring Outings

You're likely not venturing far this spring. But even if it's just for backyard adventures or dog-walking, we have some prime gear:

Your spring season is likely going to be pretty mellow… staying at home, or near-to-home. Perhaps you’ll have the chance to go for some local walks or jogs?

Maybe it’s all backyard recreation for you this season?

Well, if you’re able to safely get outside, but find yourself needing some new sun protection, a stylish spring jacket or a new pair of kicks—or some fuel to keep the energy flowing—read on. We have some awesome gear for spring 2020. (All available online, of course.)

BUFF Pack Baseball Cap

($40; buff.com)

BUFF makes headwear with brims, too—and a lot more—like this technical take on the classic ballcap. BUFF’s all-new Pack Baseball Cap combines high quality materials with a flat-brim silhouette to give a trendy yet functional outdoor look. Plus, it crushes to nearly nothing—slip it in a pocket and this chapeau will pop right back to shape.

Arc’teryx Seton Jacket

($270; arcteryx.com)

We love that Arc’teryx used their technical expertise to craft an around-town bomber jacket. DWR sheds light rain and the hydrophobic, fast-drying synthetic insulation keeps us cozy right down to freezing. Soft performance fleece lines the cuffs, collar, side panels and hem. And the face fabric is Tyono 20—which is lightweight and breathable while being durable enough to fend off snags.

Merrell MQM Flex II

($170; merrell.ca)

The second iteration of the MQM features tear-resistant athletic uppers, a flexible cushioned midsole and a mountain-grade outsole—with mud-gripping five-millimetre lugs. A bellows tongue keeps the grit out; a rock-plate and TPU toe cap keeps your tootsies safe. It packs the best features of a trail runner and a hiker into one fast, protective shoe.

RX Bar Peanut Butter & Berries/ Banana Chocolate Walnut

($3; mec.ca)

We have been loving RX Bars since they showed up on Canadian shelves last year—the simple, whole ingredients and protein- and fibre-packed recipes power our hikes and skis. This year, we’re chowing on two new flavours: Peanut Butter & Berries (a riff on the classic PB&J) and Banana Chocolate Walnut (think mom’s banana bread).

Q Energy 3 Pack

($6; qhydration.com)

Mix a packet of Q Energy in your water bottle for a boost on the trails. Rather than a chemical-loaded energy cocktail, Q uses ginseng, B vitamins, Quercetin (a veggie-derived bioflavonoid that helps you metabolize calories), natural caffeine (from coffee), electrolytes and natural colours derived from sweet potato. Tastes good, feels good!
