The Happy Camper: Canoe Tripping on Canada’s 150th
We did it in style. Lots of style. I headed out again with blogger Camper Christina to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday the best way possible—on a canoe trip.
We loaded props for the party. Canadian swag T-shirts, hats, flags, maple leaf sparklers, maple leaf dinner jacket, maple leaf bikini… and an iPod full of classic Canadian music. (Thanks Christina for not only gathering most of the props, but also carrying them on the portage.) I even brought my old Canadian flag canoe—something that looks like Super Dave Osborne would paddle. The one rotted gunwale needed some Duct tape to get us through the trip but she still looked awesome paddling across the water. We even had a speedboat of cottagers stop and sing the national anthem to us. How cool is that.
The route was an accessible wilderness not far from Toronto. Noganosh Lake is an unmanaged provincial park set between the Pickerel River and Magnetawan River. It’s one of my favourite places to go.
We spent the time fishing for monster bass, cooking up Canadian cuisine: Pacific salmon, wild rice, poutine, beaver tail with Smarties, french toast with real maple syrup and bacon… lots and lots of bacon.
