The Happy Camper: Fall Canoe Tripping in a Hot Tent, Haliburton Highlands Waterway Trails
Haliburton Highlands Waterway Trail’s Frost Centre area, located just south of Ontario’s Algonquin Park, is made up of provincial crown and municipal lands, adding up to 26,500 hectares of backcountry to roam around in. There are over 60 lakes to paddle and 171 interior campsites to choose from.
Last weekend my canoe partner, Kristine, and I (and the two dogs, Angel and Oliver) chose a site set amongst a birch grove, tucked away in Raven Lake’s Deer Bay. The autumn colours were amazing, and the nights were crisp and clear. It was idyllic to say the least.
I chose to paddle my enlarged 17 foot prospector so I could camp in comfort, and we pitched a hot tent between the birch trees and cooked our Thanksgiving feast in a Dutch Oven on top of a wood stove.
