10 of the Best Snowshoe Trails near Toronto



Our Ontario freelancer shares her favourite nearby snowshoe trails

Winter fitness pals: who says you have to put in time at the gym through the cold months? Bundle up and get active outdoors! Snowshoeing is great exercise. Add some weights to your ankles to get those legs burning or take it easy on a beginner route. We’ve got some of the best snowshoe trails around the GTA, no matter what you’re in the mood for.

1. Serena Gundy Park & Wilket Creek Park to the Don Valley Trails

Length: 5+ km
Time: 2+ hours

The lovely scenery will get you through these challenging trails. With a high and narrow elevation, you’re sure to sweat through the cold.

Where can I find this trail?: Park at Sunnybrook, cross the bridge over the creek and go through the Don River Watershed.

2. Scenic Caves Trail

Length: up to 9.8 km
Time: 2 – 3 hours

Though the trails are short, the suspension bridge is enough to keep you coming back. Get to the top and take in the crisp winter air while overlooking the stunning Georgian Bay area.

Where can I find this trail?: 160 kilometres north of Toronto

3. Albion Hills Conservation Area 

Length: up to 24.9 km
Time: 1+ hours

Look out for the pink trail on the winter trail map. Then, take off on your journey through mixed forests that are beautifully sprinkled with snow. With mostly flat terrain, navigating will be your biggest challenge on this route.

Where can I find this trail?: 55 kilometres northwest of Toronto in Caledon.

4. Ganaraska Forest Centre

Length: 2.5 or 8 km
Time: 3 hours

Leave the noise of cars behind, as these trails are designed for non-motorized fun. Choose between the two paths and get lost in the beauty of the forest.  

Where can I find this trail?: Port Hope.

5. Christie Lake Conservation Area

Length: 10 km
Time: 3 – 4 hours

Nothing smells like winter more than fresh pine forests. Take in the wildlife, beginners; this trail full of wildlife and meadows is for you.

Where can I find this trail?: Approximately 75 kilometres west of Toronto.

6. Snow Valley

Length: 16.9 km total
Time: 4 – 5 hours

Bring your entire family to this beginner-friendly area and enjoy the powder white snow together. Don’t worry go-getters, there are some challenging trails for the seasoned snowshoe expert, too.

Where can I find this trail?: Barrie.

7. Crawford Lake 

Length: 8.5 km total
Time: 2 hours

There are three trails in the unique setting of Crawford Lake’s reconstructed 15th century Iroquoian village. Snowshoers aged 14 and up can embark on a guided Moonlight Snowshoe Hike.

8. Mountsberg Conservation Area

Length: 7.2 km
Time: 1 – 3 hours 

Ungroomed trails plus the sugar bush equals a beautiful winter workout. Strap on your shoes and explore.

Where can I find this trail?: 74 kilometres west of Toronto in Campbelleville.

9. Rouge National Urban Park

Length: Varies

Time: Varies

These trails scream “back to nature.” From Lake Ontario to the Oak Ridges Moraine, there’s a lot of ground to cover. These trails are rugged, so come prepared.

Where can I find this trail?: Scarborough.

10. Cedarvale Ravine and the Beltline

Length: 7 km
Time: 3 – 4 hours

Literary lovers, explore Hemingway’s 1920s neighbourhood! After you pass the hard-packed trail, you’ll catch the re-naturalization happening in the middle of the city.

Where can I find this trail?: Starts at the Rosedale subway station and ends at the Davisville station.
