Starry Skies
Ontario Parks has announced their first two dark sky preserves—introducing the Killarney Provincial Park and Lake Superior Provincial Park dark sky preserves, which have been recognized by the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada.
Protecting dark sky areas allows many birds, amphibians, insects and plants to have important uninterrupted periods of darkness during the night. Ontario Parks has stated they are committed to the protection, awareness and preservation of our night skies.
Celebrate the historic designation at “Stars Over Killarney” on September 22. Expert and amateur astronomers will view stars and planets through powerful telescopes and binoculars. Visitors are invited to experience the park’s new 16-inch research-grade telescope. Tickets can be purchased for a special Science North and Killarney experience with dinner.
Frontenac Hiking Challenge
Take the Frontenac Hiking Challenge. Participants will hike each of the eleven main hiking loops at Frontenac Provincial Park between September 1 and October 31. Registration for the challenge is free; however, park user fees still apply.
